The Beginnings

There is too often an artificial divide between political activism and community engagement. Inspired by Barack Obama and the country's optimism in the face of adversity, Adam Cohen wanted to find a solution to the many issues that plague American communities. He noticed that too often citizens see a divide between local issues, the political promises of the government, and the community's response. Heeding Barack Obama's advice to believe in the change ordinary citizens can bring to communities, he founded Initiative X.

Initiative X, a nonprofit organization, seeks to form a coalition between universities, communities, and the government in order to address a single community specific issue. The members of the group show a dedication to both field work in local communities and to political activism. Initiative X strives to use the resources at hand and the political processes to improve the community. We must recognize the responsibility we have as individuals, communities, and Americans to actively participate. We believe in a hands-on approach to both service and politics.
